The short version
- On September 23, OpenAI announced voice-based work features for the ChatGPT mobile app.
- Plus and Pro users get the Work tab on their phone: create a document, draft an email or summarize Slack messages, by voice or text.
- Free and Go users get plugins and connected apps on mobile.
- Work started on the phone can be picked up on the desktop.
What changed
Until now, the agent-style features in ChatGPT were something you used at a desk. The mobile app now carries the same Work tab for Plus and Pro subscribers, and you can drive it by talking. OpenAI also says voice conversations now return richer text, and that switching between voice and typing is easier.
Why it matters for a small business
Owners and field staff do a lot of their communicating from the truck, the job site or between appointments. Being able to say "draft a follow-up to this morning's quote, friendly, mention the Thursday opening" and find it waiting on the desktop is a real time saver, if the draft is good enough to send with light edits.
Who this is for, and who can skip it
Act now if your team is already on ChatGPT Plus or Pro and does client email or quoting away from a desk. Skip it for now if your team is not on a paid ChatGPT plan, or if the work involves client data your policies keep out of ChatGPT.
What to do this week
- Pick one person who writes a lot of email from their phone.
- Have them voice-draft three real follow-ups and finish them on the desktop.
- Count the edits. If each draft needed only light changes, it's worth rolling out. If not, wait for the next update.
